The Sitges Community Gospel Singers, led by the inspiring Yvette, offers a joyful, non-judgmental space to explore gospel music. Singing isn’t just about performance—it’s a wellness practice proven to reduce stress, enhance happiness, and build meaningful connections.

Hi Yvette, thank you for taking the time to talk to us today, let’s find out more about your mission to bring gospel to Sitges.

What inspired you to start your choir, and what’s your mission?

I’ve been singing gospel songs and listening to gospel music for over 40 years. I started as a child and always sang at home or in church. I have also sung in many choirs over the years.

Building on my experience of gospel, and developing the skill of singing with vocal coaching,

I thought it would be a great adventure to invite others who also love gospel music to join me and form The Sitges Community Gospel Singers.

Based in Sitges, the choir welcomes locals and newcomers from across the Garraf region, including Sant Pere de Ribes and Vilanova, to join in weekly singing sessions that boost wellbeing and connection.

How do you define "wellness," and how does your choir support it?

Wellness is the active pursuit of physical, mental, and emotional well-being through healthy habits, self-awareness, and balanced living. Singing offers all these benefits.

Research consistently shows that singing and especially singing in groups like a choir, in community settings, offers significant benefits that include enhanced social bonding, stress reduction, improved mood-the feeling of happiness, and even physiological improvements like reduced pain and increased lung capacity.

In light of mounting concerns about loneliness and isolation and the urgent search for solutions, it is fascinating that people seem to be returning to an interest in connecting with one another through singing. It’s with this information, I hope to build the Sitges Community Gospel Singers.

What’s the philosophy or core values that guide your work?

I believe that everyone can sing. It’s a skill, so it can be learned. I believe that singing is not just for famous singers, but for the everyone person who wants to improve their well-being. I can support people through their fear of singing with others, and coach them to find their voice and confidence.

Tell us a little about yourself - what’s your background, and what led you to work in the wellness space?

I have been singing for over 40 years and I’m aware of the research that has identified singing with wellness. So I’ve been in the wellness space for a long time.

What’s one wellness ritual or practice you personally swear by?

Singing every day…singing in the shower, in the car - on the way to/from work, while cooking a meal or even walking the dog! These and many more offer us opportunities to sing.

How do you stay inspired and continue learning in your field?

I love all genres of music from Gospel, Jazz, Classical music, Reggae, Soul & RnB, etc.

Engaging with all, on various levels, helps me to be remain creative, motivated and practicing in the music field.

What’s one thing people might be surprised to learn about you?

I love watching True Crime podcasts.

What can someone expect from their first experience with your group?

Let me quote someone “It was really fun! The techniques, enthusiasm and love from Yvette was spectacular!”

It’s about non-judgmental support, guiding through a process, having fun to learn, meeting like-minded people who also want to sing gospel.

How do you help people integrate wellness into their daily lives?

Once they understand the benefits of singing, then try to practice it in their daily lives.

Do you have any client success stories or transformations that stand out?

The first Sitges Gospel Summer School recently started…(June & July)..This is a platform where to support people who want to learn how to sing and will practice with gospel songs. In September, the Sitges Community Gospel Singers/Choir will begin.
