Rescue Me International Animal Foundation is a registered NGO in Spain and a 501(c)(3) nonprofit in the USA. We’re dedicated to protecting and improving the lives of animals through year-round rescue work, including:
A Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) program
Ongoing cat sterilization efforts
Foster care for stray and abandoned animals
Charity Shop
Our mission is simple: to reduce suffering, prevent overpopulation, and give every animal the chance to feel safe, cared for, and loved.
My name is Cheryl, and I’ve been rescuing animals since I was four years old.
I grew up on a farm in Iowa (USA), surrounded by animals and raised to be both kind and compassionate. I was also raised to be an advocate — to speak up for those who can’t.
Five years ago, I was fortunate enough to begin a new chapter in Spain. Not long after arriving, I was struck by the scale of the homeless pet crisis here. I saw the suffering of street animals, the high rates of abandonment, and the lack of proactive systems in place to protect them.
So, I made a promise — to the animals and to the community — that I would do whatever I could to change that.
Since then, I’ve spent my days comforting frightened and abandoned dogs, holding sick and dying cats so they know love in their final moments, and watching once-homeless animals sleep peacefully for the first time in a long time. I am humbled every day by their resilience and trust.
These animals did not choose this life.
They didn’t choose to sleep under parked cars or give birth in gardens, hoping someone won’t chase them away.
They didn’t choose to rely on the kindness of strangers for food, or to live in constant fear.
Their lives on the street are not by choice — they are a direct result of human actions: abandonment, and the failure to sterilize domestic pets.
The truth is this: animal welfare is not just an animal issue. It’s a human one.
And if we want to create lasting change, it starts with us.
